3:10 am - Question about Marik's Family

Hello, everyone!
I'm new here, so excuse the intrusion. I wanted to ask everyone's opinion on a question a friend and I came up with while watching the original YGO series. If the tomb keeper cannot go outside and only the Ishtar family (plus Rashid/Odion) stays in the tomb, how does the tomb keeper find a wife? The obviously have something worked out considering they've continued the bloodline. What do all of you think?

5:32 pm - Capsule Monsters Part 2?

Has anyone had any luck finding Capsule Monsters Part 2? It's supposed to be out today, but I had no luck finding it at Wal-Mart or Toys R Us.

No sign of GX volume 1 either, which is supposed to be out today as well.

9:39 pm - ...huh.

Coming May 23rd: YU GI OH MOVIE CAPSULE MONSTERS PART 1 DVD. I was confused as to what this was until Andre over in the Anime Jump forums explained: It's a new season of YuGiOh with the old cast, commissioned by 4Kids. Aired in Europe recently, will air on US/Canadian TV soonish, and will aire in Japan sometime. It's sole reason for existence is 4kids wanting 13 more episodes of the old cast. Kind of an oddity to see.

A decided oddity, especially when you realize that they're dragging (no pun intended) their feet with the release of the Waking the Dragons/Doma arc.

Oh, and the first volume of GX comes out in May too.

12:36 pm - GX and Millenium World previews

4Kids has preview clips of GX and Millenium World up here: http://4kids.tv/promotions/backtoduel/content.php#

Haven't tried them yet, as I'm fairly sure my connection can't handle it. But if you give it a try, give us a report. *g*

6:20 pm - Translation Help?

My son Ryan went through his Yu-Gi-Oh! cards yesterday, and discovered he had a fairly rare card he'd forgotten he'd had, GYAKUTENNO MEGAMI, a six-star monster card described as a fairy who uses her mystical power to protect the weak and provide spiritual support.

He is perplexed as to what "Gyakutenno Megami" means -- he went through his collection of Yu-Gi-Oh! books but couldn't find a translation. Needless to say, as nobody in our family speaks Japanese, it's a mystery to all of us. My wife nilajean did a websearch, to no avail.

Anybody out there in LJ-land know what this phrase means?

EDIT: Typo corrected in the name of the fairy.

1:31 pm - GX dub names revealed

There's also a series overview, character profiles and video footage.

Seems a little odd that they're gonna start it on Cartoon Network in October while KidsWB runs the KC Tournament and Millenium World arcs, but I'm not a 4Kids exec. heh.

4:26 pm - YGO character request

Heya, I'm looking for descriptions of characters of the 5th series of YGO (such as Vivian Wong / Leon etc.). Because I'm living in Germany I'm stuck at Doom but I'm going to need the other characters in order to write fanfiction. If anyone could recommend a website or give me info, I'd be very happy. ^__^

6:32 pm - Yu-Gi-Oh!:GX on Cartoon Network?

According to a post I read on a forum I frequent, YGO GX is premiering on Cartoon Network this September.

This is a rumor as far as I can tell, since none of the anime news sites I've checked have had anything on it. But if you've seen a promo on Cartoon Network or have a link to share that confirms this...

6:31 am - Hello

I just got the Yu-Gi-Oh! Online game and it completely rocks. My username is TacotheTormentor. If anyone sees me,let's duel!

I wanted to ask if anyone has a Duel Pass that came with the newest issue of Shonen Jump that they are not going to use, could you please scratch off the bar and tell me the number? I'd really really love you if you could. You can only duel a number of times with one Duel Pass. So,the more you want to duel, the more passes you will need.Just wondering if anyone out there has one and doesn't plan on using it.

7:45 pm - 4Kids launches GX site

4Kids has launched a site for Yu-Gi-Oh! GX: http://www.yugioh.com/gx.php

Years in the future, in a land inaccessible to the rest of the world, is the premiere dueling high school Duel Academia! This special boarding school educates promising young duelists to achieve their full potential. However, little do people realize that one of the greatest duelists of all time is about to arrive in the incoming class...

The students, based on a combination of duelist rankings and exams, are separated into three dorms. The most advanced students reside in Obelisk Blue. The second tier lives in Ra Yellow. The duelists with the lowest grades are in Slifer Red. Class conflicts have stood for many years with the higher-ranked dorms teasing the lower dorms, but the status quo is about to turn on its head with the newest arrival!

9:36 pm - Kids WB announces Fall 2005 lineup

Read about it here.

Pretty much confirms what I was thinking. That the KC Grand Prix and final arc will make up season five.

And according to TV Tome...

4Kids have today released details of the first season 3 DVD release. Due on March 8, "Back to Battle City" (Volume 3.1) will include the first four episodes of season 3 - the entire "Back to Battle City" duel and the first part of "The Darkness Returns".

In addition to the standard DVD/VHS release, an exclusive Starter Box will be available from Target stores starting April 5. The starter set includes an art box which will allow fans to store additional season-three DVDs and also includes a bonus Yu-Gi-Oh! yo-yo.

The individual DVD is priced at $14.98 while the Starter Box will set you back an extra $10.

9:58 am - Cyber-Stein

Holy smoke!

From Anime News Network:

"Cyber-Stein" an extremely rare and powerful Yu-Gi-Oh! card is currently on auction at eBay with the current high-bid at $25,300 at 39 hours remaining in the auction. Currently there are only two English Cyber-Stein cards in existence, both of which were given away at last weekend's GenCon SoCal (one to the Shonen Jump Yu-Gi-Oh! tournament winner, and the other to a raffle winner). While there are no plans to mass-produce the Cyber-Stein card for sale, future copies will be given away at similar convention, with the next ones being given out in February at the Shonen Jump Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG Championship in Las Vegas.

The Japanese version of Cyber-Stein occasionally shows up on eBay and is auctioned off for less than $50. The English card however is legal in North American Yu-Gi-Oh! tournaments.

Cyber-Stein is a monster, DARK/Machine/2/700/500, and its effect reads: "Pay 5000 Life Points. Special Summon 1 Fusion Monster from your Fusion Deck to the field in Attack Position." Now, there's only one Fusion monster worth paying 5000 Life Points to get on the field -- the Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon, with an ATK of 4500 points (which hasn't yet been released in the US, although there have been rumors). I use it in my GameBoy Advance deck, and it's a very powerful card, but also very risky -- you either get your BEUD out and trounce your opponent with it in a couple of turns, or else your opponent manages to destroy it or send it back to your Fusion deck (with Man-Eater Bug, Penguin Soldier, Raigeki, Mirror Force, or any number of other cards), and then you're pretty much toast -- you're down to 3000 LP or less, and you've lost your big monster. Either way, the game is generally over pretty quick after you play it.

I don't really like playing it -- I think One Turn Kills are kind of boring, and rely more on the luck of drawing the right combo of cards in your hand than skill -- but I'm at a point in my GBA game that my opponents all have way better cards than I do, and the Cyber-Stein/BEUD combo is one of the few advantages I have. I'd really rather have a couple of Gemini Elves or Goblin Attack Forces. (Yes, I could use the password to enter these cards into my GBA deck, but I prefer to play using only the cards I get in the game. It's more of a challenge.)

Anyway, I thought the Card of Sanctity (a spell card that allows both players to draw until they have six cards in their hands) that sold for over $5000 on eBay a few weeks ago was outrageous! I can't imagine paying over $25k for a card.

(PS - checking the auction listing further, I've just noticed that the listing says that bids from people with feedback ratings of 10 or less will automatically be cancelled, and the current high bidder has a feedback rating of 8. So the current bid may not stand -- we'll see! As of now, there's still a day and a half left in the auction.)

10:36 pm - The Curious Case of the Missing Card

So I picked up a copy of Yu-Gi-Oh!: The Movie at Target today. Bring it home and I open it, and there's the mail-in offer for the three cards (Blue Eyes Shining Dragon, Sorcerer of Dark Magic and Watapon). But no exclusive trading card like I'd seen in advertisements on TV and could swear I read about in news reports about the DVD's release.

Have I been gypped? Do I take it back to Target and explain? Write to Warner Bros./4Kids?

Of course, it would help to know if this has happened to anyone else...

3:38 pm - The Seal of Oreichalkos

Googling around, I have come up with these tidbits on oreichalkos:

"Plato referred to a substance called oreichalkos that was 'dug out of the earth' long ago, 'being more precious in those days than anything except gold' ('Critias' 114, Benjamin Jowett's translation). Oreichalkos is generally translated as if it were derived from Greek oreias 'of or belonging to mountains' and chalkos 'copper'. Liddell and Scott's 'Greek-English Lexicon' explains this term as 'copper ore, or copper made from it'."
--Archaeology and Mythology, Andrew Gyles

"The Atlanteans were able to produce Orichalcum (Oreichalkos). Using a complicated process probably known but not exercised during the time of Plato but duplicated later by the Romans."
-- Atlantis History's page on Plato's Atlantis and Today's Atlanteans (Note also bibliographical item, PLATO'S ATLANTIS: TIMAIOS, KRITIAS, SOKRATES, ERMOKRATES.)

"[Alan Alford's] theory also explains all of the bizarre elements in the Atlantis story, such as the supernatural creation of the island, its abundance of the unknown metal oreichalkos..."
-- New Dawn Magazine's review of the book, The Atlantis Secret, Alan Alford

"The process [of making brass] seems to have begun in the first half of the first millennium BC somewhere in the Near or Middle East, and over the next few centuries there are occasional references to oreichalkos, 'mountain' or latterly 'golden copper', in the Greek literature of those times."
-- The British History Museum's article on Europe's Earliest Brass

"From the 7th Century BC, the Greeks commented upon brass or oreichalkos, but always as an expensive, exotic metal not produced in Greece."

8:50 pm - Doma Hits America (Finally)

Well, it seems that the dubbed version of the Doma arc has finally reached TV screens here in America. (There's a pretty good summary of the episode here.) The first episode this morning was better than I thought. The only real complaint I have is the choice of voice actors. Varon (or "Valon," as they call him >_<) has a rather overdone British cockney accent, Amelda has some other odd sort of British accent, and Raphael's voice is very low and.. well.. doom-sounding. Valon is the only name that's actually confirmed, the others' names haven't been mentioned yet.

But, despite this, it looks like this new season will be a lot less heavy on the editing. The name of the Seal of Orichalcos has not changed, nor has its six-pointed star design (that one surprised me, considering how famous Yu-Gi-Oh is for star-editing). The plot also seems to be unchanged from the Japanese so far. Hopefully it will stay that way.

Any other thoughts?
